I remember when I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time outdoors, even on the coldest days in winter. The reason? I had horses to exercise!

But man, that cold weather – especially the windy days – was really hard on the skin, especially the lips. Dried them right out.

I carried a tube of lip balm around with me wherever I went. I was the girl you hear about with the coat pocket chapstick, the purse chapstick, the bathroom chapstick, the car chapstick… you get the idea.

But my lips didn’t get any better. In fact, as winter progressed, they only got worse.

Sure, the chapstick brought me temporary relief, but that’s it.

Image, taken from above, shows several tubes of lip balm laid out on a white countertop. Nearby are scattered chocolate chips, some evergreen sprigs, and a small bottle of peppermint essential oil.

The search for a chapped lip solution

This went on for a number of years before I finally learned that cheap chapstick, though it provides that temporary feeling of moisture, actually works to dry your lips out over time.

Yep, it dries them out. Exactly the opposite of what you want!

Why? Because it contains petroleum products. You know, the same family of products that you put in your car’s gas tank. On your lips. Ew.

Since then, I’ve gotten very picky about what kind of lip balm I use, and even though I’ve found a few brands I like, what I’ve really found is that it’s just so easy to make your own lip balm, that there’s no reason not to!

Image shows a ceramic bowl full of chocolate chips, with 4 tubes of chocolate peppermint lip blam in it.

In fact, there’s every reason to do it:

  • You get to switch up the ingredients and essential oils you use for scents to keep it interesting
  • Your friends will all be impressed because they have no idea that homemade lip balm is so incredibly easy to make
  • They make great off-the-cuff gifts. Since one recipe makes five tubes of lip balm, it’s easy to make enough to share, and everybody will think you’re super generous, but really, it’s just hard to make a single tube at a time. 😉

I’m super happy I learned how to make really good lip balm before I moved from Tennessee, where the weather is cold, but not nearly as drying, to Texas where, you guessed it, the air is really dry, and lip balm, and seriously intense homemade lotion is an every day must-have – at least for dry-skinned people like me.

  1. That sounds like a great recipe, especially as far as chocolate balm goes! I always hated the chocolate balms due to the funny fake flavor. I’ll have to give this a try, it’s one I may actually enjoy!
