Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk

Running out of ingredients in the middle of baking is the worst! That’s what makes this recipe for sweetened condensed milk so handy – you’ll never run out again!

Whenever I need a can of sweetened condensed milk, I don’t have one. Of course, we’re defining “need” pretty loosely here, but take last week for instance, I saw a recipe for homemade Mounds bars on Facebook, and wanted to make it to take to our church potluck.

But while I have a bulk order of coconut flakes, and a big can of powdered milk in the pantry, canned milk isn’t something I keep around.

It started simply because I was trying to keep my pantry filled with healthy ingredients, and cull out the less healthy ones.

Then after a while, I realized that I could make my own sweetened condensed milk in a matter of seconds, AND control the ingredients that go into it,  making it a bit healthier than opening a can.

Someone on Facebook recently commented, saying we should stop trying to pass off desserts as healthy, making ourselves feel better about eating junk, but I disagree.

On our journey to healthier families, the last thing we want to do is deprive ourselves of our favorite goodies – we want to healthify them, so we can feel less guilty when we do indulge. Take Healthy No-Bake cookies for instance. Should you eat them every day – or even every week? Probably not. But at least when you do eat them, you know you’re getting some nutrition from some of the quality ingredients along with satisfying your sweet tooth.

So, what can you do to make your sweetened condensed milk a little more healthy?

  • Use less sugar – and use a little less water/more powdered milk to make up for it.
  • Use cane sugar
  • Use Turbinado or evaporated cane juice
  • Use high-quality milk powder

They’re little changes, but we all know it’s the little things that add up over time.

    1. No, I haven’t. Coconut is typically sweeter than dairy milk, so I imagine you would want to use slightly less sugar, and maybe more milk powder.

    1. Definitely put it in your refrigerator! Alternatively, you could look for a recipes for canning sweetened condensed milk. 🙂

    1. That’s a really good question! It *should* work, since it’s basically the same thing, but it hasn’t been cooked down the same way that regular sweetened condensed milk has been, so I’m thinking it may take longer to brown into caramel, but really can’t be sure.
