Homemade Shea Butter Lotion Bar Recipe

Don’t you just love homemade lotion? You rub oils into your skin that not only hydrate, but nourish, and even though you can feel good about rubbing all the lotion you want into your skin, you really don’t need to use as much.

This Homemade Shea Butter Lotion Bar will make your skin so soft, and they're beyond easy to make!

I usually tend to use a combination of homemade baby lotion for my face, and homemade body lotion for everything else, I wanted to make lotion bars for traveling. With our trip to Argentina coming up, I don’t want to be without good lotion for three weeks, and I really want to minimize the number of spillable bottles in my bags, ya know?

And. I. Am. Loving them! My hands feel so silky smoooooth!

On top of that, they were so easy to make, and smell amazing – I can’t wait to give some of them away as gifts!

For the batch you see in these pictures, I used lavender and sweet orange oil to make them relaxing and nice smelling. We fell in love with the orange/lavender combination earlier this summer when we ran out of lemon oil and used orange instead. I swear, I never fell asleep so fast, or felt more relaxed!

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Combine beeswax, shea butter, jojoba, sweet almond, and coconut oil in a heavy duty sauce pan, or double boiler set up
  2. Gently heat until it’s all melted
  3. Remove from the heat, and let cool until it’s no longer too hot to touch
  4. Mix in essential oil
  5. Pour into mold – I used silicon ice cube trays from Walmart – they divided nicely into six cube/cups to make half inch thick bars.
  6. Let cool, pop out of mold, and store in a cool place – honestly, my kitchen was about 85º today, and they still set up nicely.

  1. Hi Elise – I have honeybees so I have beeswax. Can I use this instead of the purchased pellets? Same amount of wax already melted so I can measure it or just a bit less? Thanks.

    1. Yes, definitely! I just like to use pellets, or shred it so it’s easier to measure by volume since I don’t like to haul my scale out.

  2. This recipe sounds great! I can’t wait to try it. But before I try it, I wanted to know what kind of coconut oil you used. Fractionated coconut oil or regular coconut oil that hardens when it gets cold out?

  3. A couple of questions:
1- Is the finished product oily or does it absorb into the skin quickly?
2- Can i leave out the essential oils for those with sensitive skin?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Camille, It’s not oily, but it’s fairly heavy on the shea butter, so it doesn’t disappear into your skin as quickly as pump-bottle lotion.

Yes, you can definitely leave out the essential oils!

      And thanks!

  4. Hi, do you know the yield for this recipe? The total ingredients add up to about an lb. I don’t want to compare apples to oranges, but in bottle form that would last quite a while. Also could one add rose water or some other liquid to make this a pump able lotion? Thanks a lot
