I borrowed my mom’s old Food Dehydrator  a little while ago, and I’ve just kind of been going to town with it ever since. It’s pretty much the perfect way to make yummy snacks for the kids without heating up the kitchen. The heat thing is pretty important to me right now – we only cool one room of our house after all.

This blueberry-banana fruit leather recipe has been a big hit. I had to cut the G-man off after eating an entire sheet of it.

I’ve learned that putting banana in fruit leather is the absolute best way to sweeten it without adding sugar. And don’t forget – the riper the banana, the sweeter, and therefore, better.

A word about dehydrators: In my opinion, a dehydrator is an awesome investment. Sure, they cost a little bit to get into – my mother paid close to $75 for the one I now have. I’ve seen much cheaper models, though I can’t vouch for how well they work since I haven’t used them. I’m just saying there’s so much you can do with them, and once you’ve made the investment, you’re done. There’s no continuing cost, and I’d wager it’s a lot cheaper and easier to dry things in the dehydrator than in the oven, plus it allows you to use your overripe fruit, or buy really good deals on fruit to make cheap snack food.

    1. Most dehydrators come with solid inserts for fruit leather some of the trays. If not, parchment paper works fabulously!

  1. Hi, I’m just starting the fruit leather game (our dehydrator came yesterday) should the banana be over ripe or just regular ripe?
    Thanks

    1. my personal preference is overripe banana – they’re sweeter, and in my opinion have a better flavor, but it won’t hurt to use regular if that’s your preference.
